Why we require an e-mail address and password

By entering your information on the Count Down Your Carbon website, you will be able to track the effects of your CO2 reductions on the site across several visits. Information regarding actions that you have taken to lower your CO2 emissions will be saved, allowing you to add to your reductions at any time. This also allows Count Down Your Carbon to calculate the combined impact of everyone's actions in a way that is truly representative of the effort made.

To ensure that we account properly for each individual's actions and don't double-count any contributions, we only count those actions associated with a valid and verified e-mail address. When you provide your e-mail address, Count Down Your Carbon will send you a message containing a link. By following this link, you prove to Count Down Your Carbon that that e-mail address is working and that you are its rightful owner.

Furthermore, we ask you to provide a password. This prevents an individual from manipulating another user's actions in the calculator. For increased security, we do not store this password on our server or transmit it over the network: only a salted cryptographic hash of the password is retained, greatly reducing the risk of password compromise.
